Students from the Queensland Conservatorium music school visited our Gardens recently and, following a practice session, delivered a short concert to the delight of visitors.
The students are all studying trombone at the Conservatorium and we discovered there are more than one type of trombone. The students explained the depth of sound is governed, not only by the slide, but by the number of bends in the tubing – and therefore the total length of the tube. You will see in the video that the number of bends above the player’s shoulder vary on different instruments. Some have a single bend and others have up to three. The more bends, the deeper the tone. We discovered there is a gentle competition between the instrumentalists about which has the better tone, higher or lower.
The Botanic Gardens team welcomes musicians wish to utilise the gardens to practice or play. Contact our Secretary for details: secretary@tmbotanicgardens.org.au.
